The Burnet High School powerlifting team competed in the Badgers Invitational hosted by Lampasas Jan. 22.
The Bulldogs finished second overall with 30 points and the Lady Dawgs were seventh overall in the team standings.
The Bulldogs were led by William Horner, who took first in the 114-pound weight division, Alek Kassner, who seized gold in the 165-pound weight division, and Adam Heffington, who came in first in the 275-pound weight division. All three “lifted the most they have lifted” in the squat, head coach ZaneHicks said.
“We’ve only been to one meet this year, so all three improved,” he said.
Many Lady Dawgs are involved in other activities, so some didn’t compete in this meet because of schedule conflicts. Most of those lifters are the ones who typically medal, Hicks said
“I mainly had young girls on the girls side,” he said. “So really for them, it was either their first meet or just their second, because I think I took about five freshman girls. So it was good for them just getting experience doing it because sometimes it’s scary in your first time ever lifting and your second time. And you still get a lot of nerves because there can be quite a few people at those meets. Whether they’re watching you or not, you think everybody’s watching.”
So for those lifters to earn scores was a big deal because the sport has two components – the ability to lift weight and a judge that observes how each athlete’s lift and decides if it meets the criteria to earn a score.
“Having a good lift but not scratching because you did something is a big part of it,” the coach said.
Powerlifters are in the weight room four times a week, Hicks said.
“I’m a big believer in being strong,” he said. “But a lot of those kids can get strong on their own. I think it’s a confidence thing for a lot of those kids. Some of them will lift forever and continue on and some of them will get out of it or off and on, but I think it’s good to build a big, good foundation for the rest of your life. I believe in it.”
Burnet will compete in the San Saba meet at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29.
